Road to Saint Erinsburg
Harlaheim
Four soldiers protected the former lord of knights and the rescued king and queen, they were silent and nervous, not knowing what to make of what had transpired. Florin was unseen when they escaped, the Bishop had the army, and the ruling nobility was helped by second group of cloaked men at the north gate. The east side of the city was swarmed with riots and siege, and the plan had been to get to Saint Erinsburg, by the fastest route. So they did, and they had not stopped to rest more than half an hour in nearly a day and a half of riding.
Since the escape, it had been quiet, far too quiet indeed. The morning sun beamed in large rays over and through the misty pine forests and farmlands south of Saint Erinsburg. The uneasy quiet was not just surrounding the few remaining men from Cristoffs army, but Savanno, Richmond, and Rosana as well. There was a tension that would take a mighty axe cut to break, none of the three felt all too comfortable in the current situation. Savanno had held himself back from kissing the queen too often, and Rosana restrained herself as well. Richmond seemed scared and nervous, perhaps due to them and the fact that he was out of power in his own kingdom.
“We near Saint Erinsburg, I need one soldier to ride ahead and send word that we are here, and another to fall back and see if we are being trailed. Norrice, take the rear.” Savanno motioned his hand to the front and rear of the foggy road they traveled, and two of the remaining soldiers did as they were told.
“Almost there my love, then we leave for Shanador, the house of Azarris, together.” Savanno spoke low that Richmond, nor anyone else, would hear.
“Savanno, I must tell you something.” Rosana turned her tan angelic face toward him, her long dark hair wisping across her cheeks and eyes. She smiled and reached out her hand to his as the horses kept at a walking pace next to one another. “I am with child, three months or more, maybe four now.”
“I know my queen, I know.” his hand reached hers and he returned the smile, his shaved head and face still splattered with small spots of blood from the fight far behind them.
“How?”
“I could tell. Kalzarius knew as well.” Savanno chuckled.
“Why did you not tell me?”
“That I knew? Why did you not tell me, Rosana?”
They both laughed a bit, and stared into one anothers eyes for a long moment, their horses obliging perfectly and remaining still.
“It is over, finally, yet not as we planned.” Rosana leaned and kissed him, long, soft, and slow. The kiss was returned, longer and softer, and even more slowly than it was given.
“No, that was not a quiet and secretive escape in the night. I will pray for forgiveness, for those that fell.” Savanno, for all the love he felt, all the relief, he also held the shame of those that had died, both for and against him.
